I've always found low-sec to be more 'profitable' then high-sec. Of course, for me, 'profit' in game has never really been about the virtual money to be made but about the fun, friends and thrills to be had. Also, since I make (after isk from pirating) most of my isk from trading, it doesn't matter where my main spends time. Ratting and missioning for isk make this pod pilot's eyes bleed.
Much luck to the OP. If you have more fun, thrills and make better friends in low-sec then in grinding missions in high sec then you have 'profited' more imo. How much isk you generate falls below those 3 as a game goal for me and hopefully for you.

1) I'm hardly a veteran. Was a rookie around 7 months ago and headed out to low-sec on my second day in-game to make my way there with my wits while PvPing. I did sit down and write some of my experiences down and got very good feedback from vets and other rookies at the time which some folks must've thought were worth something since the thread can be found stickied in the Ultimate New Player Guide above. Here's a faster link: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=568675 So I know a thing or two first hand about low-sec as a rookie and making isk at it.
I recommend you read it. It might make you less likely in the future to fly off the handle and maybe you'll learn a thing or two you didn't learn your first go around in EVE.
2) I hate assumptions. I don't have established trade alts. I use untrained alt characters I rolled on my Main's account. That's right Hippy Dave. My trade alts make me very good isk and they have the same SPs today that they had when I rolled them. Which means that the success I have with them is the same type that is available to any rookie right out of the starting gate.
Good luck Hippy Dave. I wish you fewer assumptions in the future.
PS - It truly made my morning to read your post with a cup of coffee and feel that warm glow that comes with knowing that you really irritated someone who really deserves it.

Hi Nur!
I've never been back to high-sec to make isk and I did get a second account a few months ago to help with hauling. I rarely need him but he does save me some logistics hassles. He doesn't make me much isk though since I use his sell/buy slots to sell the corp's loot from kills.
So in 7 months I've made all the isk I need and then some (I never want for isk.) through my unskilled trade alts and pirating primarily w/o making a dime in high-sec on my main or with a trained up trading alt for high-sec. It's easily doable in my experience.

Nur - Yes I do sell much of it in low-sec when profit is my main motive since it fetches a better price at mission hubs in low-sec then in high sec. Mission runners and unlucky pirates gotta rekit sometimes. When I just wanna unload it quick for low hassle then I dump it in high sec.
Hippy - Don't feel too responsible. This argument has been going on at least as long as I've been in game and certainly longer. You do need some friends but well-established isn't a prerequisite. Three of the folks (including myself) that started our corp were on trials at the time and of the 6 of us that started it, none of us were over 3 months old. Yes though, you are on the money, it means a lot to be more active. Though we do have many members that take long breaks when they need and some that are only on a couple nights a week.
Bottom line: If a rookie thinks they might enjoy the challenge there is absolutely no reason not to give it a shot. What do you have to lose? Some T1 frigs?

Edited by: Ard UnjiiGo on 15/02/2008 21:42:55 Agreed. While EVE's strength is not PvE it does provide opportunites for rookies to take a shine and even be successful at a myriad number of different aspects of the game from mission runner, miner, trader, scammer, pirate/antipie or 0.0 alliance member to name many but not all.
The thing that I found discouraging as a rookie was that you would hear folks (who I'm guessing had what they found to be traumatic experiences in low-sec more often then not their first few forays) quite shrilly denounce low-sec as no place for rookies because they would just end up shot down (like this is the end of the world) and discouraged. You don't hear the same arguments made as loudly for other aspects of EVE as a rookie. People don't call you out and say "Oh NO! Don't listen to him about mining. It's so boring you'll just hate EVE!!"
Every rookie can figure it out for themselves what they like and for many rookies taking the plunge into low-sec is what may keep them in the game and get them hooked. It's a rush and a thrill.
Some have argued quite loudly about the value of isk and how important it is to your enjoyment of the game. Think someone said you "need" it. While this is true on one level. You do require isk to enjoy the game. the amount of isk you require depends on you. I don't "need" 15mil worth of implants and never did as a rookie to enjoy what I was doing in low-sec and I don't "need" a faction ship that is faction fitted. To me (and certainly not speaking for others by any means) growing a pixel ***** addiction is the last thing I want since it starts to sully my enjoyment of the game and my comfortableness with taking risks in it. How much isk do you "need"? That's dependent on each players skill and comfort level. You can make all the isk you "need" in low-sec to support a low-sec life style be it trader, miner, mission runner, pirate or antipie if you aren't a pixel ***** addict. That's my .02isk.
Edit: Popped a salvage coercer in low-sec last night. It was fitted with a Gisti MWD. Who really "needs" to farm so many missions they can afford to throw a faction mod on a salvage boat. Apparently this guy. Never will be me.
